Strange Victory present Mudhoney at The Limelight in Belfast on Sunday 3rd October 2010. Mudhoney (Sub Pop), a grunge band formed in Seattle in 1988 from the remains of Green River, is made up of vocalist Mark Arm, drummer Dan Peters, guitarist Steve Turner and bassist Guy Maddison. Mudhoney’s early releases – the ‘Touch me I’m Sick’ single and the ‘Superfuzz Bigmuff’ EP were very influential in the Seattle music scene and helped inspire the dirty, high distortion sound that would later characterize grunge. Although nearly calling it a day in 2001, Mudhoney have remained together for over twenty years and have recorded and released eight albums. Support comes from Sub-Pops Unnatural Helpers.

Wooden Shjips (that's not a typo) is a vital and refreshingly inspired quartet from San Francisco playing loud rock 'n' roll in a style heavily influenced by the experimentalism of psychedelia, classical minimalism and garage rock excess. Their songs sound something akin to the icy garage rock of early Echo & The Bunnymen, but with Kim Salmon of the Scientists as its frontman. There are hints of krautrock, the trance-inducing organ haze of Suicide with Deerhunter style dance-drone, classic desert-fried garage psych all mixed into one explosive whole - Wooden Shjips, the self-titled Holy Mountain debut.

NIGHTMARCHERS - take Speedo (ex Rocket from the Crypt barker/broom swinger, Hot Snakes riff architect, The Sultans booking agent, Pitchfork stylist, and lest not forget Swami Records honcho humungous and KBZT 94.9 FM DJ to the stars). Then add the black Irish of Dner (ex Hot Snakes subsonic maestro, current Beehive and the Barracudas legal representative, White Apes roadie and merchandise coordinator, and of course, I would be remiss to not mention his ongoing contributions to the field of recording science at the helm of Strange Sounds recording studio). Now reinforce these bad intentions with Thee Mount Olympus of all rhythm sections. Literally, an all-Greek powerhouse suspended by Ionic fortitude and bathed in a distilled olive oil suitable for the same rectal lubrication that eased in democracy and the Olympics. J. Sinclair K. propels these files with the same vintage overload he brought on the drums while steering Hot Snakes, Delta 72, Bardo Pond and Mule. At the ripe young age of 56, newcomer Thomas Kitsos, aka Titus Gangbangus of CPC Gangbangs fame, lays a heavy pipe on the four string bass guitar. Tommy recently relocated to San Diego from Montreal where his father owns and operates a Greek Restaurant, and his mother is a witch/fortune teller. After one listen to the band’s earliest demos, the Department of Naturalization & Immigration granted Titus a green card with no questions asked. A quick Wikipedia search will tell you no less.

Obits formed after singer/guitarist Rick Froberg (Drive Like Jehu / Pitchfork) returned to New York in 2005 following the breakup of Rocket From The Crypt offshoot Hot Snakes. In 2006 he began writing new material and rehearsing with drummer Scott Gursky of Shortstack and guitarist Sohrab Habibion, formerly of Edsel, with bassist Greg Simpson. Obits made their live debut on January 12, 2008 at club on New York's Lower East Side called the Cake Shop. A bootleg recording of the show circulated on the internet, and the band posted two of the songs from this recording on their MySpace profile for listening. The recordings caught the attention of Sub Pop A&R representative Chris Jacobs, who invited them to perform at the label's twentieth anniversary festival in Seattle that summer.Obits signed to Sub Pop shortly after, but released their debut single "One Cross Apiece" / "Put It in Writing" on their own Stint Records imprint.

The fantastical tale of King "Bama Lama" Khan begins in 1995, when the Montreal-born son of immigrants from India (and self-professed grandson of the opium-addicted "Johnny Thunders of the sitar") left home to play bass for the Spaceshits, a Cramps-linked garage-rock group fronted by Mark Sultan, aka future King Khan partner BBQ Show. A few years later, while in Germany Khan formed "psychedelic soul big band" the Sensational Shrines. By 2004, King Khan and the Shrines had played shows across Europe, along the way releasing not just a handful of 7" and 10" records, but also two full-length albums: 2001's Three Hairs & You're Mine, which was produced by White Stripes engineer Liam Watson, and 2004's Mr. Supernatural.

Instead of finding a quiet recording studio, HEALTH recorded their debut full length in one of their favorite places. The Smell is an all ages music venue in downtown Los Angeles. It is open and brick and dirty and dark, but when you sing a church hymnal or hit a drum as hard as you can the sound is beautiful. They did both of these things on their record. They also went out and found equipment born the same time as The Smell, mostly ribbon microphones designed by the BBC for radio broadcasts in the 1930's, things George Martin liked to use, and other things they didn't know about. The record is 11 songs in less than thirty minutes - on it there is new music with old sounds.

Sub Pop's newest indie rockers Oxford Collapse are a guitar/bass/drums trio from Brooklyn comprising of Michael Pace (vocals/guitar), DanFetherston (drums), and Adam Rizer (bass/vocals). Combining a charming lack of guile with a capable and focused aim towards creating intelligent and catchy pop, Oxford Collapse are the perfect antidote to tired cynicism and rubbish haircuts.

Max Tundra live in Belfast 2009

There are more ideas crammed into the 41 minutes of Max Tundra’s third album than most bands manage in their whole careers. Parallax Error Beheads You, the third Max Tundra LP (on Domino Records) is a masterpiece of micro-melodies and sound-bytes; a triumph of splicing, dicing and editing. It’s an intricate mosaic of sounds and genres, some of which you might recognise from the last 30 years of pop, rock, prog, disco, funk, techno, rap, metal and soul or from Max inventing an original one himself. The attention to detail, and the sheer speed at which ideas whizz past you in the mix, will leave you stunned.

To date The Broken Family Band have released two mini albums and four full-length albums. They’ve performed more sessions for Mark Lamarr than any other band. John Peel was a big fan. The use of their song ‘It’s All Over’ on the Skins television programme soundtrack has led to the unwanted attention of beautiful teenagers from all over the world. Singer Steven Adams is the only living human being to have performed sessions on BBC Radios 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6Music.

"It's like Arcade Fire meets Akron/Family...only better!"... Port O'Brien began early in the year 2005, as a folk-ish duo of Van Pierszalowski and Cambria Goodwin. The two penned songs while Cambria lived in the tiny Californian coastal town she shares her name with and Van lived in an apartment in Oakland…which was about the size of his name. Shortly thereafter, Cambria moved to up to the Bay Area and within the next year, the project added a rhythm section, comprised of Caleb Nichols and Joshua Barnhart.

Lisa Hannigan started her singing career at the age of 6 as the fairy on top of the Christmas tree in the school play. On the long car journeys down to west cork for summer holidays she sang the backing vocals to her mothers’ front seat Joni Mitchell and Nina Simone and to this day knows all of the words to Paul Simon's "Graceland" and the Queen back catalogue. The first record that Lisa ever bought was Michael Jackson's "Bad". Although in those days it was called a tape.
